The Harlow Hotel | Preservation and Adaptive Reuse
I partnered with Maggie Fernandez, a fellow student of mine at the University of Oregon, for this project. We were taking a Historic Preservation and Sustainability course taught by Paul Falsetto, and chose to work with the Harlow Building, located off the north park blocks in downtown Portland, Oregon. We met with the current owner, walked through the building taking photographs and notes, recording character defining features and brainstorming how the historic building could be restored. This report shows our analysis as well as our concept for the Harlow Hotel’s potential. We included in-depth descriptions of the building, historic character defining features for the National Register of Historic Buildings, as well as an annotated LEED checklist.
We were taking the Adaptive Reuse studio taught by Erica Ceder and Tim Mitchell (employees with Fletcher Farr Ayotte) at the time, dealing with the design of the US Motor Bank, located further south in downtown.
